A new global network to promote a culture of prevention was launched during the XIX World Congress on Safety and Health at Work, in Istanbul, Turkey on 12 September, marking a new stage in international cooperation in the field of occupational safety and health.

The global network for a culture of prevention aims to provide a platform for cooperation to exchange knowledge and good practices to enhance a worldwide prevention culture, and is hosted by the Korean Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) with the support of the International Labour Organization and the International Social Security Association (ISSA).

Istanbul Declartion

The Istanbul Declaration was adopted at a Summit of Ministers meeting in Istanbul, Turkey on 11 September 2011 prior to the XIX World Congress for Safety and Health at Work. It has been welcomed as an “important milestone” in the promotion of prevention at the workplace. The Istanbul Summit involved ministers from 32 countries.

The Ministers participating in the Summit stated their full and unconditional support to the background and objectives of the Seoul Declaration joining the original signatories in support of the Seoul Declaration. The Ministers also declared their commitment to take the lead in promoting a preventative safety and health culture worldwide, and to place occupational safety and health high in their national and regional agendas.

The 2nd Strategy Conference in Dresden, Germany was held on 3-4 February 2011 to find the opportunity to explore how the various international strategies on safety and health at work could be better linked with one another and how implementation at the national level could be better coordinated. At the end of the first day, the delegates signed the Seoul Declaration to explicitly express their commitment to a worldwide prevention culture.
